Scapa distillery was established in 1885 by John Townsend, on the shore of the Scapa Flow. The island has a fruitious history, with almost 3,000 relics, such as a Viking palace and Neolithic standing stones. The site on which the distillery sits was used in both world wars as it forms a natural harbour. Two of the original Victorian warehouses survive, but most of the present buildings date from 1959 after a rebuild by Hiram Walker, and a new still house was added in 2004. The distillery draws its water from the Lingro Burn. The water itself is hard and peaty and this gives the slight smoky flavour to the whisky.
